Day 6 -Traveling West Through the Land of a Thousand Hills

Written by: Liz Henrich

We were up early today for our 4 1/2 hour ride to Gisenyi. What a beautiful ride winding through the mountains of Rwanda. We viewed monkeys along the road and 3 volcanoes, only one of which is considered active. We also had some great views of Lake Kivu.

We stopped for lunch for “goat on a stick”, roasted potatoes, meat pies and ginger juice. We are learning to enjoy the local offerings of food, mostly very yummy.

We met with the local women’s cooperative in Gisenyi. Pictured is the president of the group, Soleil, and 30 other women. They introduced themselves and described their businesses and gave us an idea of how successful they have been and also what their struggles are. Some have gone through some very tough challenges.

President of Cooperative – Soleil

Women’s Cooperative Group – Gisenyi

We as a team feel that we are called to encourage this group of ladies to persevere and put their trust in God. The Bible study presentation today was to look for miracles. They know Jesus and trust in Him every day to sustain them. Through generous donations from folks back home, The Africa Women’s Hope Initiatives ministry will give the Gisenyi women cooperative a $400 savings bonus. The savings bonus will empower them to do businesses, develop the group savings spirit and hold each other accountable. The ladies send thanks and hugs!
